Would you otherwise have to pay for your recognition?

4pmFriday: Craigslist proves that writers are a valued commodity - just not for pay →

    4pmfriday:

I’m not the biggest fan of Craigslist when it comes to the job hunt, but it’s also not a bad place to look. As a writer though, I unfortunately see many gigs/jobs/assignments that don’t offer pay but the “benefit of experience and exposure.” Isn’t that nice of them?

These type of “work for free and get paid IF we get published” ads are all over the damn place. Listen buddy, your imminent book deal is not reason enough to solicit the unpaid work of others. You need artwork to get your writing noticed? Then you have to pay for that artwork. Think about it like this: if a musican/band wants to score a record deal, they need to record a demo. Do you really think any recording studio is going to let them use their facilities with the promise of payment “if we get signed”? Of course not. You gots to pay to play.
